FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Michigan Tech volleyball team opened Saturday’s (Sept. 5) play at the Sharks Classic like it has every other day this season, with a five-set match. Tech defeated Barry, 3-2, before falling to No. 16 Nova Southeastern.
The Huskies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead (25-18, 25-19) against the Buccaneers, but would drop the next two (23-25, 16-25).
Tech dominated Barry in the fifth set winning 15-4. The Huskies held a 10-3 advantage in kills in the set, with the other Barry point in the match coming from an attack error by the Huskies.
Tech finished with a 70-45 advantage in kills during the match.
Sophomore
Kristine Sexton recorded a match-high 16 kills for the Huskies and junior
Amanda Vogt chipped in 11 kills.
Senior
Veronica Armstrong tallied 17 digs to lead a quartet of Tech players with 10 or more digs.
Freshman
Madeline Haben made 52 assists in the match for the Huskies, her second highest total of the season.
“This win was kind of redemption after losing to Lynn yesterday in five sets,” said head coach
Orlando Gonzalez.
Nova Southeastern won set one 25-19 but the Huskies took set two 25-17. The set was the only one that the host Sharks lost all weekend. Nova went on to win the next sets (25-16, 25-18) and the match.
“We executed average in the first set. In the second set we created opportunities and executed,” said Gonzalez. “We need to believe we can beat teams regardless of who they are.”
Sexton once again lead the team with 14 kills and Armstrong finished with 11.
Freshman
Rachel Glisch and senior
Kaari Nevanen each finished with a team-high 10 digs.
Tech will open play in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Friday (Sept. 11) at Lake Superior State. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
