BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Michigan Tech nipped Ferris State 5-4 today in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis match. The Huskies dominated the top flights in the match to split their weekend matches and improve to 2-2 overall.
Every one of the nine individual matches today was lopsided. Fortunately for the Huskies a majority went in the win column. Both the top two doubles teams won by 8-1 scores, and FSU gained an 8-2 victory at No. 3.
Sophomores
Victoria Zhilkina and
Ploy Suthijindawong each won their singles matches in convincing fashion (6-1, 6-1) at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Suthijindawong improved to 4-0 in GLIAC singles, while Zhilkina advanced her season record to 3-1 in league play.
Nathalia Rondelli’s 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles sealed the team win.
“We didn’t do very well at the bottom of the lineup, but it’s nice to come away with a win,” said head coach
Mike Axford.
Michigan Tech will return home for two matches next weekend with Tiffin and Ashland coming to Houghton Friday (Oct. 2) and Saturday (Oct. 3), respectively.
