SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Michigan Tech surged to a 16-2 lead over Missouri Western midway through the first half and never looked back in a 67-37 win at the Drury Classic at Weiser Gymnasium today. The No. 1-ranked Huskies limited the Griffons to 29 percent field goal shooting in the game to improve to 2-0.

Senior Katie Wysocky was the story of the game as she became Tech’s all-time leader in rebounding. The 6-0 forward pulled down 14 boards in the game to run her career total to 875 and surpass Dawn Zarling’s 866. The record-breaking rebound came with 3:30 to play in the opening half.

Tech opened the contest by holding Missouri Western to just one field goal through the first nine minutes of action. In the meantime, Wysocky tallied 11 points and Sarah Stream added eight to stake the Huskies to a 37-17 advantage at the half.

Tara Ferris and Katie Zimmerman buried 3-pointers to start the second half as the lead grew to 43-19 with 17 minutes to play. The margin was as many as 36 and never less than 20 through the final horn.

“It was a good win,” said head coach John Barnes. “Coach (Kim) Cameron did an outstanding job of scouting and had us ready to go defensively. That carried us through since we didn’t shoot very well.”

Tech shot just 37 percent for the game including a 10-of-31 mark from 3-point range. The Griffons did not make a 3-pointer despite 13 attempts  in shooting 14-of-49 from the floor. The rebounding was even at 39 apiece, but the Huskies forced 22 turnovers while committing just 11.

All 13 available Huskies played at least five minutes in the contest and 11 of them scored points. Wysocky posted her second straight game with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Stream (11 points) and Zimmerman (10) were the only others in double figures.

Michigan Tech (2-0) will wrap up its play in the Drury Classic tomorrow with a 4 p.m. (ET) contest vs. Texas A&M Commerce.
