HOUGHTON, Mich. — The No. 4-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team led wire-to-wire in an 88-39 GLIAC victory at the SDC Gym tonight. The Huskies received points from 13 different players in winning their ninth straight contest to improve to 19-1 overall and 14-1 in league play.
Danae Danen accounted for six points in the first five minutes of the game to help Tech open up a 13-2 advantage. Tiffin made a layup two minutes later to make the score 13-4 before Danen added two free throws and
Maria Kasza knocked down a 3-pointer for a 14-point margin. The lead was never within single digits again and increased to 47-21 at the half.
The margin grew to as many as 51 in the second half before the final horn sounded.
“We wanted to play well at the start, and we did that especially on defense,” said head coach
John Barnes. “Getting the ball inside was a big key, and I was really happy with the play of our subs.”
Senior All-America candidate
Katie Wysocky led all scorers with 16 points in 23 minutes of action. Danen and
Katie Zimmerman added 12 points apiece. Tech’s bench contributed 39 points to tie the Dragons’ 39-point total output for the game.
Tech ripped the nets for 58 percent shooting including 10-of-18 3-pointers (55 percent). The Black and Gold limited Tiffin to 26 percent from the field. The Dragon’s Mandy Jaeb, who entered the game averaging 21 points per game, was held to just seven in 35 minutes of play. Coach Barnes credited the defensive play of
Sarah Stream,
Tara Ferris and
Lindsey Lindstrom in that effort.
In addition to the stellar shooting, the Huskies posted a 32-6 advantage in points in the paint and a 48-20 margin in rebounds.
Michigan Tech will remain at home for its next three games. The Huskies host Ashland Saturday (Feb. 6) at 1 p.m.
