HUSKIES FALL TO BADGERS, 4-1, AT WINTER CARNIVAL

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech hockey team was unable to claim the MacInnes Cup, the trophy awarded to the Winter Carnival champion, after it lost to No. 11 Wisconsin, 4-1, Saturday. The Badgers improved to 13-11-6, 9-9-4 WCHA and the Huskies fall to 10-13-5, 6-10-4 WCHA.

Wisconsin got on the board first after sophomore Michael Davies scored his eighth goal of the season from just outside the crease at 5:46 of the first period. Sophomore Jamie McBain and sophomore Blake Geoffrion each assisted on the power play goal.

Freshman Cody Goloubef extended the Wisconsin lead to 2-0 after he scored just seconds after the Badger power play expired at 16:53. He was assisted by freshman Patrick Johnson and senior Davis Drewiske.

Junior Geoff Kinrade busted up the Wisconsin shut out with a power play goal of his own at 2:43 of the second period. The goal was his second of the season. He was assisted by senior Peter Rouleau and senior Tyler Shelast.

Freshman Craig Johnson netted the first goal of his career at 5:40 of the final frame to put the Badgers up 3-1. He was assisted by freshman Sean Dolan and sophomore John Mitchell.

“We got back in the game with our goal to bring the score to 2-1,” said head coach Jamie Russell. “The third goal just killed us.”

Mitchell picked up his second assist of the night after he connected with Dolan on the final Badger goal at 15:24. Sophomore Ben Grotting also tallied an assist on the goal.

Junior Shane Connelly (12-11-4) of Wisconsin was named the Winter Carnival MVP. He made 27 saves on 28 shots Saturday night. He allowed just two goals on the weekend.

Junior Rob Nolan (6-8-1) made 23 saves and allowed four goals for the Huskies.

The Badgers finished 1-5 on the power play and the Huskies were 1-6.

The two teams skated to a 1-1 tie on Friday (Feb. 9).
