HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech athletics raised over $1,100 last week participating in a nationwide Think Pink initiative, which was aimed at raising funds and awareness for breast cancer. More than 1,000 universities across the country took part in Think Pink week and have raised over $200,000 towards the cause.
Student-athletes, coaches and fans all wore pink at Tech’s six athletic events during the week, and special fundraisers were held to help in the fight against breast cancer.
“This was a highly successful campaign,” said Michigan Tech Director of Athletics Suzanne Sanregret. “I was very pleased with the level of commitment from everyone involved — especially our fans. Thanks to everyone who participated.”
Pink was the predominant color at the Student Development Complex Gymnasium during basketball doubleheaders last Thursday (Feb. 14) and Saturday (Feb. 16). Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams wore pink warm-up shirts, coaches wore pink ties or shirts, and many fans wore pink as well. At hockey games both Friday and Saturday, coaches for both teams donned pink ties and ribbons.
Donations were taken at the door of all six Michigan Tech athletic events. Funds were also generated through the auction of the basketball warm-up shirts and sales of pink bracelets, paper airplanes and foam pucks.
Michigan Tech athletics will send a check for $1,132 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Organization, which is dedicated to curing breast cancer.
