HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech hockey team handed out it’s team awards for the 2007-08 season Friday (April 4). The following is a list of the awards and the winners.
Mitch’s Misfits Favorite Husky on the Ice Award -- Peter Rouleau
Blue Line Award -- Bethlan McCullum
John MacInnes Slide Rule Award (Scholastic Achievement) -- Eli Vlaisavljevich The John MacInnes Slide Rule Award, presented annually to the player with the top cumulative grade point average each year with sophomore status or better. Vlaisavljevich tallied three assists in 16 games. A 2008 WCHA Scholar Athlete and member of the WCHA Academic Team, he carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average in biomedical engineering Wildcat Slayer Award -- Jimmy Kerr The Wildcat Slayer Award, which is now in it’s fifth year, is given to the team’s standout player against rival Northern Michigan. Kerr showed tremendous leadership and effort against Northern Michigan. Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award -- Mark Malekoff The Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award is named after longtime Dean of Students Harold Meese. Malekoff appeared in 37 games and tallied three points on the season. He scored the second goal of his career against Minnesota State on March 7th. He finishes his career with 13 points in 144 games. He has been named to the WCHA All-Academic Team three times and is a two-time WCHA scholar athlete.
George McCarthy Performance Award For Athletic & Scholastic Achievement -- Tyler Shelast The George McCarthy Performance Award is given to the player for both scholastic and athletic achievement. Shelast scored a team-high 16 goals and added 10 assists to finish second on the team in points with 26. Eight of his 16 goals were scored on the man-advantage. He also scored one short handed goal and two game-winning goals. He has also enjoyed success in the classroom, he has been named to the WCHA All-Academic Team three times, and he has a 3.25 GPA in business administration.
Elov Seger Memorial Award (Most Improved Player) -- John Kivisto Kivisto tallied two assists in 21 games this season after appearing in six games as a freshman. Norbert Matovich Memorial Award (Outstanding Freshman) -- Eric Kattelus Kattelus led all freshman in both assists, eight, and points with ten. He also scored two goals, including his first in a Husky uniform in a 7-1 victory over Minnesota State on October 20th. He also tallied four points in a five game stretch in February. Gitzen-Loutit Memorial Award (Outstanding Defenseman) -- Geoff Kinrade Kinrade led all blue liners and finished fourth on the team with 19 points. He led the team with three game winning goals. He also tallied a career-high three assists in a 7-1 victory over Minnesota State on October 20th. Gary Crosby Memorial Award (Leading Scorer)/Merv Young Award (Most Valuable Player) -- Peter Rouleau Rouleau scored 12 goals and added a team-high 17 assists to lead the Huskies with 29 points. He also scored two game winners and two short handed goals. He also tallied a hat-trick, scoring a short handed, power play and empty net goal, and added two assists in Tech’s 5-2 victory over Minnesota Duluth on February 15th. He also had six multi-point games on the year. He finishes his career with 19 goals and 42 assists for 61 points in 95 games.
Rick Yeo Unsung Hero Award -- Jimmy Kerr This year, the Michigan Tech hockey team awarded the inaugural Rick Yeo Unsung Hero Award to senior Jimmy Kerr. The senior captain tallied nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points on the year. He missed the final four games of the regular season with a shoulder injury before returning to the lineup for the playoffs. The award is in honor of Rick Yeo, former athletic director, assistant hockey coach, athletic development director and student-athlete at Michigan Tech.
