HOUGHTON, Mich. — Mercyhurst claimed a 9-0 win at Michigan Tech in men’s tennis action at Gates Tennis Center today. The final score did not indicate the closeness of the match, as several of the individual flights could have gone either way.
Tech, which swept the doubles points yesterday, stumbled out of the blocks today. Brett Girard and Matt Tronnes were edged, 8-6, at number one doubles. Brandon Ellefson and Alan Parenteau were defeated, 8-5, at number two, while Justin Foley and Tim Viola were knocked off, 8-4, at number three.
In singles, Girard pushed his tilt at number one to three sets before he was defeated, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Ellefson and Tronnes lost, 6-2, 6-4, at number two and six, respectively. Foley won six games over two sets at number five (6-3, 6-3).
“We did not come out with as much energy as yesterday,” said head coach Mike Axford. “We could never dig out of the 3-0 deficit.
“We were right in a lot of the matches today, so it’s very disappointing to not come away with any team points.”
Michigan Tech (3-14, 1-5 GLIAC) will wrap up its 2008 regular season with a trip to Lake Superior State next Saturday (April 12).
