HOUGHTON, Mich. — The Michigan Tech women’s tennis team excelled in its final regular season match of year today. The Huskies defeated St. Scholastica, 8-1, at Gates Tennis Center.
Tech jumped out to a great start with a 3-0 day in doubles. The Huskies cruised to victories at number two and three before completing the sweep at number one, Amy Palmgren and Nicole Kirch pulled out a hard-fought 9-7 decision.
Michigan Tech claimed the top five singles flights by surrendering just four or less games in each straight set win. Palmgren, a senior, posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout in the final home match of her career.
St. Scholastica won its only match at number six singles as Angela Sheilds defeated Danielle Stoll, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
“We played well for not having played for four weeks,” said head coach Mike Axford. “It was good to get back on the court and play and a great way to end the season on our home court.”
Michigan Tech, which was ranked fourth in the latest regional rankings, is in position to gain a berth into the NCAA Tournament. The tournament field will be announced later. First round matches begin May 8.
