HOUGHTON, Mich. — Construction has begun at Michigan Tech’s Sherman Field to install a synthetic playing surface. ProGrass, which is headquartered in Pittsburgh and has installed field systems across the country, has been awarded the contract.

The construction process will include removal of the old playing surface, updating the drainage system, replacing the subgrade and installing the new turf. The turf is a synthetic grass system with sand and rubber infill.

Tech will be the ninth of the 12 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools with artificial turf. Two others (Ashland and Hillsdale) have a playing surface from ProGrass.

“The installation of the turf is the culmination of a lot of hard work and support of many individuals,” said Suzanne Sanregret, Michigan Tech’s Director of Athletics. “The field will benefit not only the football team, but the university and community as a whole. We’re very excited to get this project underway.”

Sherman Field and its vicinity will be closed during construction, and the public is asked to stay clear of the site. Michigan Tech has installed a live camera in the Sherman Field press box, which can be viewed on the web at: webcams.mtu.edu

Scheduled completion is July 19 with a dedication set for Tech’s home opener in football on August 30 vs. Winona State.
