Michigan Tech today announced the hiring of former Huskies’ All-American Josh Buettner as assistant men’s basketball coach. Buettner (pronounced BIT-ner) comes to Tech after playing professionally in Europe for three years following his graduation in 2005.
Buettner was a standout student-athlete at Michigan Tech from 2001-05. The 6-9 forward finished third on the school’s all-time scoring list while being named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year as both a junior and senior. He earned All-America accolades each of his final two seasons and was selected as the school’s Raymond L. Smith Award winner as its top senior student-athlete in 2004-05.
Following graduation, Buettner played professionally in Denmark, Switzerland and Iceland. He was named the Danish Elite League player of the year his second pro campaign.
“I am excited to get started and do whatever it takes to get Michigan Tech back on top of the GLIAC,” said Buettner. “My goal is try to recruit quality student-athletes and give them the same great experience I had at Tech. I will work hard with the players to help them perform well both on the court and in the classroom.”
Buettner is just the fourth assistant coach under head coach Kevin Luke in 14 seasons.
“This is an exciting time for men’s basketball,” said Luke. “We’ve hired a past player, and we’re looking forward to having him contribute as a coach. He’s very knowledgeable about the game and will bring in some good ideas. I look forward to him developing our young post players. I hope he does as well coaching as he did as a player.”
Buettner will officially begin his duties at Michigan Tech on July 1.
