BAY CITY, Mich. - Michigan Tech senior
Andrea Metz was one of six females honored with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association Commissioner’s Award. The award given for academic and athletic excellence, sponsored by Meijer Incorporated, is awarded to six female and six male athletes for the fall, winter and spring seasons.
“This award honors the great career that Andrea had at Michigan Tech,” said Michigan Tech athletic director Suzanne Sanregret. “She embodied the ideals of Div. II athletics.”
Metz, a senior majoring in chemical engineering at Michigan Tech, won the 1,500-meter run at the 2008 GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in a school record time of 4:38.33. Her time also provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Track and Field Championships. The Marathon, Wis., native also ranks fifth in school history in the 3,000-meter run (10:31.20) and eighth in the 5,000-meter run (18:35.86). She was also selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team for cross country and track and field. The three-time All-GLIAC Academic selection was named most improved on the Michigan Tech women’s track and field team in 2008.
Metz joins three other Michigan Tech athletes to earn the award this season, senior Amy Palmgren (women’s tennis), senior Catherine Rottier (women’s basketball) and senior Kevin Maloney (men’s basketball). Michigan Tech claimed four of the 36 GLIAC Commissioner’s Awards handed out during the 2007-08 season.
