ATLANTA -- The Michigan Tech women's basketball team earned the second-best grade point average of any NCAA Division II women’s basketball program it was announced today by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. It is the second straight season the Huskies have ranked among the top five of the nearly 300 teams nationwide. They were fourth a year ago.
Michigan Tech boasted a team GPA of 3.639, which trailed by just a hundredth of a point to South Dakota’s 3.649.
“I’m extremely proud of the team and what they’ve accomplished in the classroom,” said head coach John Barnes. “It means even more that they won a conference regular season title and tournament championship.”
Tech posted a 23-8 overall record in 2007-08 and claimed both the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division title and tournament championship. The Huskies also qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the third time under Coach Barnes.
Grade point averages are calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by each student-athlete on an institution's roster in the given academic terms by the total number of hours earned by the team. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point.
Including Tech, the GLIAC placed five teams in the top 25: Gannon (ninth, 3.508), Ashland (15th, 3.439), Northwood (23rd, 3.398) and Findlay (25th, 3.385).
