HOUGHTON, Mich. — Three-set wins at three of the six singles flights helped Michigan Tech to a 6-3 win in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s match action at Gates Tennis Center today. The match took five hours, 38 minutes to complete, and ended with the Huskies gaining their third win of the season.
Tech led, 2-1, after doubles thanks to an 8-5 win at No. 2 and a 9-8 (4) triumph at No. 1.
In singles,
Nathalia Rondelli won her match at No. 3 to put the Huskies up, 3-2 as a team. Wayne State won at No. 6 singles to tie the score at 3-3 before the hosts claimed each of the final three matches in third sets.
No. 1 Victoria Zhilkina moved to 4-1 on the season with a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4 victory over Sharon Gill. Tech’s
Samantha Jang-Stewart posted the deciding team point with a come-from-behind, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4.
Asel Otunchieva polished off the Huskies’ second straight win with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (5) decision at No. 5.
“We put ourselves in good position with doubles, then got big wins at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles,” said head coach
Mike Axford. “The middle of our lineup was good all weekend, and hopefully they can continue to build on that confidence as we play our final three matches of the season.”
Michigan Tech (3-3 overall and 3-3 GLIAC) will head to Ashland for a Friday (Oct. 10) match at 3 p.m.
