HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech hockey team out shot the University of Toronto 41-16 but gave up three power play goals to lose 3-1 in an exhibition game Saturday (Oct. 4) at the newly renovated John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
The Varsity Blues finished the game three for seven on the power play while the Huskies were scoreless on their 12 chances.
“I thought the officials called a great game tonight,” said head coach
Jamie Russell. “We were not very disciplined. A lot of our penalties were due to us not moving our feet.”
Defenseman Eddie Snetsinger had a hand in all three Toronto goals. He opened the scoring with a power play goal at 4:06 of the first period. He then assisted on the Varsity Blues second power play goal by forward Byron Elliott at 11:44 of the middle frame. Snetsinger also assisted on the team’s final goal by Robert Kay at 12:05 of the final period.
Junior
Ryan Bunger broke up the Toronto shutout with an even strength goal with just under four minutes remaining in the game. The Huskies pulled goaltender
Rob Nolan with nearly a minute to go but could not find the back of the net.
Russ Brownell made 40 saves on 41 shots and Nolan finished with 13 saves on 16 shots.
The Huskies will open the regular season Friday (Oct. 10) with a Superior Showcase game at Northern Michigan. Faceoff is set for 7:35 p.m.
