BAY CITY, Mich. — Michigan Tech received the inaugural Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award during the league’s recent executive council meeting. The award honors the institution in the GLIAC that best displays sportsmanship toward visiting teams from its student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans.
Coaches in each of the league’s sports where there is a round robin schedule ranked their top three choices to receive the award. Despite only having six of the GLIAC’s 10 round-robin-schedule sports, Michigan Tech came out on top.
“I would like to commend Michigan Tech for winning the sportsmanship award,” said first-year GLIAC commissioner Dell Robinson. “Sportsmanship is the one of the marquee principles of intercollegiate athletics and the GLIAC. The award exemplifies total alignment with the Division II philosophy and attributes. It allows Michigan Tech athletics to be a shining example for the GLIAC and throughout the community.”
The GLIAC Sportsmanship Award is accompanied by a $1,000 award for the athletic department.
“I’m very proud of our athletics department and university,” said Tech director of athletics Suzanne Sanregret. “We make a conscious effort to treat all opposing teams and visitors well, and it’s nice to be recognized for it.”
