HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech athletic director Suzanne Sanregret announced today that head volleyball coach Krista Mikesch has resigned effective immediately. Mikesch posted a 137-165 overall record during her 11 seasons as head coach after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach with the program. She also led the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances (2006 and 2008).
“I would like to thank everyone at Michigan Tech, including my players, athletic department staff and the university community, for making my time at Tech a truly memorable experience,” said Mikesch, a 1997 graduate of Michigan Tech. “I will forever be a Husky and I will always consider the people of Michigan Tech as my family. I feel that at this time it is best for me to explore opportunities outside of the game of volleyball.”
Her most successful season came last season when she led the team to a 19-11 overall record and a birth in the NCAA Tournament. She has coached 20 All-GLIAC nominees, two all-region selections and one all-American. Mikesch was also a strong supporter of academics with 70 athletes earning GLIAC All-Academic honors.
“I would like to thank Krista for all of the hard work she has put in to make the volleyball team competitive at the national level,” said athletic director Suzanne Sanregret. “We will definitely miss her but wish her well in the future.”
A national search is underway for her replacement.
As a student-athlete at Tech, Mikesch was a four-time All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection and helped the team to its first four NCAA Tournament appearances in school history. She was named the Terry Wilson Award winner as the school’s freshman female student-athlete of the year. As a sophomore, she earned First-Team All-America honors and led the team to its only GLIAC regular season title in school history. She was also named the Raymond L. Smith Award winner her senior year, as the school’s top senior female student-athlete. Mikesch still holds two school records, assists in a career (5,093) and assists in a season (1,412) set in 1995.
