KENOSHA, Wis. - Michigan Tech junior Brian Stetter had yet another stellar performance finishing ninth at the Midwest Open - a race that featured schools from Division I, II, and III. Stetter, who crossed the line with a time of 25:35.4, was the second Division II runner to cross the line, bested by only Northern Kentucky’s Drew Harris. The University of Louisville took the race on both the men’s and women’s sides with scores of 17 and 43 respectively. Stetter led the Tech men to a sixth place finish, ahead of GLIAC foes Tiffin and Northwood.

“We took another step up the ladder today,” said head coach Joe Haggenmiller. “We had a pretty good day against one of the real elite fields that we’ve ever ran against. Brian ran a really good time, and I truly believe that he can run better if he runs smarter.”

Following Stetter were Colin Singleton (26:54) and Nick Bedbury (27:05), who finished 39th and 43rd respectively. Ken Gilkerson (46th) and Zach Carlson (47th) were the next duo of runners from the Black and Gold to cross the finish line. The pair also had a good race, finishing with times of 27:15 and 27:16 respectively over the eight-kilometer course that will also serve as the host of the Big East Championship this year.

“Colin really impressed me today,” said Haggenmiller. “Bedbury ran a good race, not to mention Kenny and Zach who had good days as well.”

On the women’s course, five Tech runners broke 20 minutes over the five-kilometer course that will serve as the regional host site. The ladies finished first out of the four GLIAC schools competing in the Open, running past Northern Michigan, Tiffin, and Northwood.

“I was pretty impressed with the way the freshmen women ran today,” stated Haggenmiller. “They took a step forward today at a big name meet.”

The Huskies finished seventh, one spot ahead of Division I UW-Milwaukee.

A pair of freshmen led the Huskies on the day finishing 34th and 35th overall. Sarah Daniels just edged out Amanda Halonen with both clocking a time of 19:25 to finish 34th and 35th respectively.

Christina Mishica finished 40th in 19:30 and Alison Springer-Wilson was two spots back in 19:31.

Lauren Rantala was the fifth runner to break 20-minutes finishing 50th in 19:45.

Both teams will compete at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota next Saturday (Sept. 26).
