SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Michigan Tech clinched at least a tie for second place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis standings with a 6-3 victory at Lake Superior State today. The Huskies finished their 2009 fall regular season with a 7-2 record thanks to six straight wins.
As it has so often this year, the top of the Tech lineup came through with big wins. The Huskies won each of the top two doubles and top four singles in the match.
Nathalie Rondelli and Ploy Suthijindawong teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, while Asel Otunchieva and Victoria Zhilkina paired for an 8-2 triumph at No. 2.
The same four players were responsible for the singles wins as well. Zhilkina, Suthijindawong and Rondelli were all straight set winners at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Otunchieva went to a third-set super tiebreaker before prevailing 0-6, 7-4 (4), 12-10.
Senior Danielle Stoll had close calls at both No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles, but fell short in both matches.
Michigan Tech will play next at the GLIAC Tournament in Midland, Mich., Oct. 24-25. Seeding and oppoents are to be announced.
