HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech senior
Malcolm Gwilliam scored his team leading fifth goal of the season at 2:21 of the second period, but it wasn’t enough as St. Cloud claimed a 3-1 WCHA win Saturday (Oct. 31) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Freshman
Steven Seigo and sophomore
Brett Olson each picked up assists on the goal.
“We didn’t get a lot of breaks in terms of bounces, and I wasn’t real pleased with our discipline early. We took unnecessary penalties and dug ourselves a hole,” said head coach
Jamie Russell.
The team was whistled for eight penalties for 35 minutes. St. Cloud was called for five penalties for 18 minutes.
Junior Tony Mosey scored the first of two power play goals for St. Cloud at 11:03 of the opening period. Mosey scored on a rebound created off a shot by sophomore Sam Zabkowicz. Junior Garrett Roe assisted on the goal for his 100th career point.
Junior Nick Oslund extended the SCSU lead to 2-0 with his power play goal with 31 seconds remaining in the first period.
Gwilliam’s goal was the lone goal in the second period and cut the SCSU lead to 2-1.
St. Cloud scored its third and final goal of the evening when junior Garrett Roe faked a shot and found junior Brian Volpei in front of the Tech net for the tap in at 4:59 of the third period.
The Huskies comeback bid was severely hindered after they took a major penalty in the later stages of the third period.
St. Cloud (3-3-2, 2-1-1) finished with a 30-18 advantage in shots over Michigan Tech (2-4-0, 1-3-0).
Junior Dan Dunn (2-1-0) made 17 saves in the win, and
Kevin Genoe (1-2-0), who made his second straight start, finished with 27 saves.
