HUSKIES ENTER 2009-10 AS A UNANIMOUS NO. 1 Michigan Tech sits atop both the Division II Bulletin and USA TODAY/ESPN Coaches national preseason polls as it begins the 2009-10 campaign. The Huskies’ No. 1 ranking is the highest in program history. Tech finished 2008-09 ranked No. 8 after advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight.
WYSOCKY NEEDS SIX REBOUNDS FOR RECORD; OTHER MARKS IN JEOPARDY • Katie Wysocky pulled down 14 boards in Tech’s season opener, giving her 861 career rebounds—six shy of Dawn Zarling’s school-record total of 866. • Danae Danen sits at 133 career blocked shots. With 14 more, she will eclipse Carie Pejka’s mark of 146 for tops all-time at Tech. • Sarah Stream enters the weekend with 331 career assists. The school record is 439, which is shared by Catherine Rottier and Dawn Zarling.
ZIMMERMAN PICKS UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF (AS NO. 1 IN NATION) Katie Zimmerman, who led all of Division II in 3-point shooting a year ago at 48.1 percent, began the 2009-10 season in similar fashion. The 5-6 Green Bay, Wis. native went 5-8 from downtown in the Huskies’ opener at Minnesota Duluth. Her 217 triples are the most ever by a Tech player.
FERRIS STRONG IN OPENER Senior Tara Ferris began her final year in a Black and Gold uniform in impressive style. The 5-9 guard made several strong moves to the rim, and made good on all six of her free throws. The Hartland, Wis., native tallied 13 points and a team-high four assists in the opener against Minnesota Duluth.
UNCHARTED TERRITORY Missouri Western and Texas A&M Commerce are two teams the Huskies have never faced off against in their 35-year history. Saturday’s (Nov. 21) matchup with Texas A&M Commerce will mark the first time that Tech had squared off against an opponent from the Lone Star State.
COACH JOHN BARNES Michigan Tech seventh-year head coach John Barnes owns a 126-52 career coaching record and .708 winning percentage. Barnes has led the Huskies to two GLIAC North Division titles (2008-09 and 2007-08) and four NCAA Tournament appearances (2008-09, 2007-08, 2005-06, 2004-05). He has been named GLIAC Coach of the Year twice (2008-09 and 2005-06).
