RIPON, Wis. — Michigan Tech opened its 2010 men’s tennis season with a pair of 9-0 victories today. The Huskies swept both Lakeland and host Ripon to start its regular season.
Tech debuted a lineup with two new players. Luka Stupar played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in his first outing as a Husky, while Evan Smith went a combined 4-0 at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
The day’s closest matches for Tech were in singles against Lakeland.
Anders Sandholm needed a third-set super tiebreaker to win at No. 2 6-0, 3-6, 10-5. Stupar posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 1. Chris Verhulst notched a 6-0, 6-4 triumph at No. 4.
Every other match during the day the Huskies won without surrendering more than three games.
“It was good to get the season started with a couple wins,” said head coach
Mike Axford. “The matches will help us get some confidence and be ready for next weekend’s tough opponents.”
Michigan Tech (2-0) will host Lake Superior State and Lewis next weekend in important non-conference matchups at Gates Tennis Center.
