HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech received big games from Fedrick Bowe and Georgio Holt to defeat Finlandia 81-58 today at the SDC Gym. Bowe tallied career- and game-highs of 22 points and 15 rebounds while Holt added a career-best 17 points to help the Huskies move to 3-2 on the season.

Four 3-pointers by Holt in the first six and a half minutes helped the Huskies jump out to a double-digit lead. The hosts expanded the margin to as many as 18 before the Lions battled back to within seven at the 2:15 mark of the half. Thanks to a layup and dunk by Bowe in the final 90 seconds of the half, Tech entered the locker room up 36-23.

Holt and Bowe were major contributors in the second stanza to keep Michigan Tech with a double-digit lead the remainder of the contest.

Finlandia’s shooting percentage (42.0) was just better than Tech’s (41.7), but the Huskies held a plus-16 margin in rebounds (46-30) and a plus six edge in turnovers (14-20).

Michigan Tech also benefited from 26 second chance points in the contest.

“Offensive rebounding and free throws were the reason we had success today,” said head coach Kevin Luke. “We didn’t shoot very well again, and we need to overcome that in the future. We got separation in the second half by getting a lot of putbacks.”

In addition to Bowe and Holt, freshman Brian Olley reached double figures with 10. All 11 available Huskies played and 10 scored. Chris Baugh had a nice game with nine points and seven rebounds.

Michigan Tech will be off until Thursday (Dec. 4) when it travels to Wayne State to open its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule. Tipoff in Detroit is set for 7:30 p.m.
