HOUGHTON, Mich. - Colorado College scored a pair of power play goals en route to a 4-1 victory during Winter Carnival Saturday (Feb. 7). The Tigers were crowned Winter Carnival champions with the victory paired with a 2-2 tie the night before. With the win, Colorado College improves to 14-9-7, 10-8-4 and Michigan Tech falls to 5-19-6, 1-15-6.

The win was the first for the Tigers in Houghton since a 5-1 victory on Jan. 29, 2005.

“We dug ourselves a hole tonight,” said head coach Jamie Russell. “I thought we had an awful first period. I thought the last 40 minutes we did a lot better but we weren’t able to finish our chances tonight.”

Senior assistant captain Chad Rau put the Tigers on the board first with a power play goal at 8:29 of the first period. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native ripped a wrist shot over the blocker of senior Rob Nolan for his 13th goal of the season. He was assisted by junior Brian Connelly on the goal.

Sophomore Tyler Johnson, who was named Winter Carnival MVP, gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead after he fired a shot that hit a player in front and then floated over Nolan into the goal at 15:35 of the first period. Senior Scott McCulloch assisted on the goal.

Senior Cody Lampi sent an initial shot that was saved by Nolan but he stole the rebound from a Husky defender. He then beat Nolan high on the glove side at 3:08 of the second period.

Freshman Josh Robinson replaced Nolan following CC’s fourth goal. Nolan (2-14-5) finished the night with 25 saves on 29 shots.

Johnson then scored his second goal of the game and the final for the Tigers at 3:50 of the final frame. Junior Mike Testwuide recorded his fifth assist of the game on the even strength goal.

Sophomore Deron Cousens broke up the Tiger’s shutout with his fourth goal of the season at 11:32 of the third period. Senior Geoff Kinrade and freshman Brett Olson each assisted on the power play goal.

Cousens and Olson each extended their point streaks to four games, the longest streak of both of their careers.

Sophomore Richard Bachman (12-8-7) made 27 saves on 28 shots for the Tigers and Robinson made five saves in roughly 16 minutes of work.

Michigan Tech will make its final road trip of the regular season when it travels to St. Cloud State next weekend (Feb. 13-14) to take on the league’s other Huskies.
