DULUTH, Minn. — The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team opened its 2009 campaign with a victory Saturday (Feb. 7) at St. Scholastica. The Huskies swept every flight on its way to a 9-0 score.
Playing at No. 1 singles for the fourth straight year, senior Brett Girard picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Tech’s next two slots were filled by freshman who both secured their first collegiate wins. Anders Sandholm was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 2 singles while Douglas Yossida went 6-2, 6-3 in his No. 3 singles match.
In all, the Huskies didn’t surrender a set in their first of 15 scheduled regular season matches this spring.
“We played a very solid match,” said head coach Mike Axford. “It was a good way to start the season, and it should give us confidence going into next weekend.”
Michigan Tech (1-0) will host Lewis and Lake Superior State next Saturday (Feb. 14) at Gates Tennis Center. Match times are set for 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
