FINDLAY, Ohio — The Michigan Tech men’s basketball season came to an end in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinals tonight at the hands of No. 1-ranked Findlay 64-46. The Huskies stayed within six at the break but couldn’t match the depth of the host Oilers (29-0).
“We played a great first half, and Robby (Springborn) got hot,” said head coach
Kevin Luke, who has guided Tech to 10 trips to the GLIAC Final Four. “Their depth got to us in the second half, and (Josh) Bostic showed why he’s the player of the year.
“They’re hard to beat anywhere, especially here.”
Tech battled toe-to-toe with the nation’s top-ranked team through the first 20 minutes with the help of 7-of-13 3-point shooting. Springborn had five triples and poured in 17 points in the opening half. His five straight points in the final minute closed the gap to 31-25 at the intermission.
Findlay opened the second half on a 13-2 spurt ending with a 44-27 lead and 10:30 to play. The Huskies’ long-range shooting struggled to a 1-of-15 showing in the final stanza.
The Oilers shot 43 percent from the field compared to the visitors’ 33 percent. The Black and Gold held a 35-32 rebounding edge, but committed 15 turnovers to just six by UF.
Tech played without the services of senior starting point guard
Sean Geary, who was injured in the GLIAC Quarterfinal game at Hillsdale last Tuesday (March 3).
Three other seniors played their final games in a Tech uniform. Springborn wrapped up a stellar four-year career with 25 points to go with three rebounds.
Fedrick Bowe recorded a game-high 12 rebounds to go with four points and three blocks.
Brandon Ball added five points and six assists.
Bostic finished the game with 27 points and six rebounds for Findlay.
Michigan Tech concluded its 88th season of intercollegiate men’s basketball with a 14-15 record.
