OSHKOSH, Wis. - Freshman Molly Wiltzius broke the Michigan Tech school record with her throw of 129-7 in the discus to finish seventh at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational Saturday (April 4). She also posted a 14th place finish in the shot put with a mark of 36-5.5. Her mark in the shot put was the 10th best in school history.

Junior Ken Gilkerson ran a smart 800 race to finish first in 1:54.74, 0.34 seconds shy of the school record.

Junior Kevin Kayser claimed Tech’s other event win of the day in the high jump with a leap of 6-6.

“Today it was nice to get in a meet with pretty good weather at a first class facility. I thought we had a lot of performances that set us up for better results as we move forward,” said head coach Joe Haggenmiller. “Molly is really performing well for a freshman and is working on rewriting our record books. It is exciting to have someone with her talent joining us. Kevin had a good showing this early in the season and Ken ran a great tactical race and we are excited to see him build upon where he was last season.”

Sophomore Brian Stetter led most of the 5,000 but was unable to pull off the win finishing second in 15:31.25.

The Huskies also turned in a pair of strong performances in the 1,500 with sophomore Ian Connick finishing fourth (4:05.70) and junior Chris Schafer finishing 10th (4:17.54).

Junior Kevin Bence finished fifth (10:14.91) and sophomore Jacob Hill finished eighth (10:43.15) in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Tech also ran a pair of top-10 performances in the sprints. Senior Aaron Tetzloff finished 10th in the 100 (11.60) and sophomore Robert Strobel was 10th in the 200 (23.55).

The 4x100-meter relay of Strobel, Tetzloff, sophomore Alex Weldum and freshman Jordan Huffman finished fifth in 45:04.

The 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore Aaron Knopp, sophomore Aaron Cedergren, sophomore Aaron Addison and Gilkerson finished eighth in 3:37.07.

Senior Jason Foster made the finals of the javelin finishing ninth with a throw of 124-6.

Senior Lauren Wiza led most of the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase but tripped over the final barrier to finish third in a personal-best time of 11:59.58, the third fastest time in school history.

Junior Alison Springer-Wilson finished third in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 41:10.20.

Other top-10 finishes for the women included senior Laura Kangas finishing sixth (19:33.18) in the 5,000 and sophomore Kristina Mishica finished eighth (5:00.53) in the 1,500.

“I think we had a number of other athletes perform well and the teams as a whole are showing improvement. I look forward for us to continue to build upon this as the season progresses.”

The men’s team finished fourth with 47 points and the women were ninth with 20 points.
