INDIANAPOLIS — The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The NCAA has announced its pairings for the 2009 Men’s Tennis Championship, and the Huskies, who finished fifth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and posted a 9-9 overall record, will face top-seeded Northwood (17-1) in the opening round.

Tech and Northwood will square off a 11 a.m. next Thursday (May 7). The winner will play the winner of Grand Valley State vs. Ferris State the following day (Friday, May 8) at 10 a.m.

The opening two rounds of matches in the NCAA Midwest Regional will take place at Northwood’s Gerstacker Courts. In the case of poor weather, matches will be moved to the Midland Community Tennis Center.

“It’s exciting—especially for our three seniors,” said 22nd-year head coach Mike Axford. “It’s a credit to them that the team’s to the point we have a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament.”

Tech’s three seniors are Brandon Ellefson (Sun Prairie, Wis.), Brett Girard (Marquette, Mich.) and Alan Parenteau (Milford, Mich.). The Huskies won five of their final six matches to get into a position to earn the at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament.
