Underclassmen Skiers Succeed at Sprint Races

WAUSAU, Wis. - A small group of underclassman on the Michigan Tech Nordic ski team competed at the Junior Olympic Qualifier Dec. 19-20 in Wausau, Wis., with coaching by graduate assistant coach Andrew Joda. Redshirt freshman Lauren Rantala won the Olympic Junior Classic Sprint race and finished third in the freestyle.

Freshman Sarah Daniels, who is redshirting this season, finished second in the freestyle and sixth in the classic race.

The men’s team was also represented with four racers competing.

Redshirt freshman Luke Gesior finished third in the “A” final of the classic and fellow freshman Jay Woodbeck finished first in the “B” final.

Freshman Matt Dugan finished ninth Andy Keller was 10th overall in the classic sprint.

In the freestyle race, Keller led all Tech skiers with a sixth place overall, followed by Gesior in seventh and Dugan in eighth. Woodbeck finished 10th in the freestyle race.
