HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech rallied from a 4-1 second period deficit, but junior Sean Wiles scored in the third period for Alaska Anchorage to give the Seawolves a 5-4 WCHA win Saturday (Jan. 16) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
“It’s definitely a heart breaker being down 4-1, and then you come back and tie it at four, only to find yourself on the short end at the end of the night,” said head coach
Jamie Russell. “I thought that we had a great sixty minute game. We generated 36 shots on goal.”
Tech (3-20-1, 2-16-0) finished with a 36-22 advantage in shots over Alaska Anchorage (7-14-1, 5-21-1).
Sophomore
Brett Olson scored his third goal of the weekend at 7:54 of the first period. The Superior, Wis., native redirected a shot for his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Senior
Malcolm Gwilliam and junior
Bennett Royer each picked up assists on the goal.
Senior Kevin Clark scored his first goal of the game 11:19 and followed up with a power play goal at 13:33. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native recorded his third point on the night with an assist on junior Tommy Grant’s goal at 3:05 of the second period before completing his first career hat trick with his third goal at 4:22.
Junior
Jordan Baker recorded three points to tie the game at 4-4. He tapped in a pair of rebound goals at 14:35 and 15:33 of the second period, and assisted on freshman
Steven Seigo’s power play goal at 18:50 of the middle frame. Olson also assisted on Seigo’s goal for his fourth point of the weekend (three goals, one assist).
UAA junior Sean Wiles tipped a shot by freshman Drew Darwitz at 1:29 of the third period for what would hold up as the game-winning goal.
A pair of Seawolf penalties gave the Huskies a six-on-three advantage for nearly one minute at the end of the third period but the Huskies were unable to find the equalizer.
Sophomore
Josh Robinson (1-7-0) made 17 saves for Tech and senior Jon Olthuis (5-7-1) made 32 for Anchorage.
Tech will enjoy a weekend off before hosting Minnesota State Jan. 29-30.
