Game 27 Highlights
HOUGHTON, Mich. - Senior Malcolm Gwilliam scored two goals and added one assist to lead Michigan Tech to a 4-1 win over Minnesota State Friday (Jan. 29) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies improve to 4-20-1 overall and 3-16-0 in the WCHA and the Mavericks fall to 11-15-2, 5-13-1.

“I thought we did a good job all the way around tonight,” said head coach Jamie Russell. “We did a good job in our end and I thought that a couple of times we gave up a few odd man rushes in the secondary because our third guy was up on the offensive zone and trying to bite off a little too much and their defense was just on and they got a couple of opportunities that way.”

Junior Jordan Baker had the best scoring chance of the first period. He created a turnover near the blue line and then skated in and sent a shot on the Maverick goal that was saved by sophomore goalie Austin Lee.

Baker would find his way onto the scoresheet less than 90 seconds into the second period when he sent a pass to senior Drew Dobson for the tap in goal at 1:26. Junior Eric Kattelus also picked up an assist on Dobson’s fourth goal of the season.

Gwilliam picked up his first of three points on an assist on sophomore Brett Olson’s team-leading 13th goal of the season. Senior John Kivisto also assisted on the goal at 7:13 of the middle period.

Gwilliam closed the scoring in the second period after putting away a loose puck in front of the net at 17:38. Junior Bennett Royer recorded the lone assist on the goal.

Dobson recorded his second point of the evening after Gwilliam scored on a rebound off of Dobson’s shot. Kivisto also tallied his second assist of the evening on the power play goal at 15:05.

Minnesota State spoiled the Tech shut out less than 30 seconds later. Junior Rylan Galiardi capitalized on a poor Tech turnover in its defensive end to score his sixth goal unassisted at 15:35.

Freshman Kevin Genoe (3-13-1) made 30 saves on 31 shots in his third career win.

Lee (7-10-0) made 24 saves in the Maverick loss.

The two teams will wrap-up their season series Saturday (Jan. 30) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
