HOUGHTON, Mich. - Sophomore Brett Olson scored twice for Michigan Tech in its 3-2 loss to Minnesota State Saturday at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Mavericks (12-14-2, 6-13-1) out shot the Huskies (4-21-1, 3-17-0) 42-30 in the contest.

“I thought our special teams did some good things,” said head coach Jamie Russell. “I thought we didn’t convert on a five-on-three and we had a couple of opportunities, and I thought that our penalty kill was good. What really made the difference was that we made some very poor decisions.”

The Mavericks got on the board first at 9:51 of the first period. Junior Kurt Davis sent a long shot from the point that was tipped in front by freshman Tyler Pitlick. Tech freshman goalie Kevin Genoe made the initial save but the puck trickled behind him where junior Rylan Galiardi poked in the puck for the power play goal.

Galiardi also had a hand in the Mavericks second goal picking up his 10th assist of the season on freshman Eriah Hayes power play goal at 16:09.

For the second night in a row, junior Jordan Baker sent a centering pass from the wall but tonight it was sophomore Brett Olson who scored the tip-in goal. Junior Deron Cousens also assisted on the goal at 19:50.

Senior Kael Mouillierat tallied his eigth goal of the season for what would hold up as the game-winner at 12:23.

Olson would tack on one more goal for the Huskies thanks to a great set-up from freshman Steven Seigo. Seigo made a move around a defender then found Olson on the post for his team-leading 14th goal of the season at 16:14. Seigo has recorded at least one point in each two-game series for the Huskies this season.

State finished the evening two-for-eight on the power play and Tech was one-for-seven.

Freshman Phil Cook (4-1-1) made 30 saves for the Mavericks and Genoe (3-14-1) made 42 for the Huskies.

Tech will host Minnesota Duluth Feb. 5-6 for Winter Carnival.
