COLERAINE, Minn. - The Michigan Tech men’s and women’s ski teams made a strong showing in the first NCAA qualifying meet of the year at the Mt. Itasca Super Tour Saturday (Jan. 24). The Huskies placed five skiers in the top-30 in both the men’s and women’s 10-kilometer classical race.
“We skied pretty well today,” said head coach Joe Haggenmiller. “It was nice to get back in the groove of racing after returning from Alaska. Unfortunately the temperatures were only slightly warmer than they were in Alaska.”
Junior Liz Quinley lead the women’s team with her 10th place finish in 32:14.2. Fellow junior Jenna Klein was six spots back in 16th with a time of 33:28.3.
Sophomore Jill Smith had the race of her career finishing third on the team and 17th overall in 33:52.0.
Freshman Christina Mishica finished 27th (34:57.1) and senior Laura Kangas finished 30th (35:19.7) to round out the top-five for the Huskies.
Freshman Petter Sjulstad led the men’s squad with a 10th place finish in 26:14.9 over the 10-kilometer classic course. Junior Erik Mundahl finished 22nd (27:21.7), followed by junior Jesse Lang in 23rd (27:26.4) and freshman Jesse Smith in 24th (27:28.6). Junior Oskar Lund, who joined the team at semester, finished 27th in his first collegiate race in 27:56.3.
Michigan Tech will close the weekend at the Super Tour by racing in the freestyle race Sunday (Jan. 25).
