ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Michigan Tech wrapped up its two-match road trip by defeating Southwest Baptist, 6-3, today. The Huskies (15-6 overall) have won three straight matches and seven of their last eight.
For the second straight day, doubles proved crucial as Tech won two of the three points. Samantha Jang-Stewart and Asel Otunchieva gained an 8-4 victory at number three doubles. Southwest Baptist won the number two doubles flight before Silvia Oliveros and Nathalia Rondelli scored a big win at number one. The duo outlasted the Bearcats’ tandem in a 9-7 decision.
The momentum carried over to singles, where the Huskies won four of the six flights. Amy Palmgren cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at number one. Oliveros and Asel Otunchieva also posted straight set wins at number two and number five respectively. Rondelli was leading her number four singles match, 6-4, 2-1, when her opponent retired.
“Silvia and Nathalia had the match of the day at number one doubles,” said head coach Mike Axford. “It put us up 2-1 and gave us confidence going into singles.
“Overall, it was a very good trip. It put us in better position for an NCAA Tournament berth.”
Michigan Tech will take two weeks off before hosting Lake Superior State and St. Scholastica at Gates Tennis Center on Sunday, April 13.
