HOUGHTON, Mich. — Findlay shot 58 percent from 3-point range and committed 10 fewer turnovers in defeating Michigan Tech 77-55 in GLIAC men’s basketball today at the SDC Gym. The Huskies held a 34-27 rebounding advantage, but made just 36 percent of its field goal attempts in falling to 4-11 overall and 3-7 in the league.
Tech started the game well enough. The hosts were ahead 27-19 at the 6:30 mark of the opening half after three straight layups including a
Matt Gaedke three-point play. Findlay switched to a 3-2 zone and proceeded to score the final 16 points of the half for a 35-27 margin at the break.
The Huskies closed to within 47-42 on a Gaedke 3-pointer with 15:36 to play. The Black and Gold had two opportunities to further cut into their deficit but turned the ball over both times. The differential grew to as many as 13 before
Mike Hojnacki’s put back made it a 61-53 game and gave the home crowd hope with six minutes to play.
Findlay (12-3, 8-2 GLIAC) registered the next nine points over a two-minute span to quell the threat.
“We took a step backwards today,” said head coach
Kevin Luke. “Findlay’s got a good team, but we didn’t do the little things that would have given ourselves a chance to win this game.”
Tech turned the ball over 22 times in the game and struggled shooting in the second half with a 4-of-14 mark from 3-point range.
Gaedke led the Huskies in points with 13.
Don Fowler added 11 points, four rebounds and three steals.
Ali Haidar recorded a game-high nine rebounds to go with six points.
UF was led by GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year Marcus Parker’s 20 points.
Michigan Tech will begin a four-game road stretch with Saginaw Valley State next Thursday (Jan. 21).
