HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech used 18 second-half points from Robby Springborn and a late 13-3 run to pull out a 69-60 victory over visiting Wayne State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball today. The Huskies shot 48 percent from the field and made 20-of-24 free throw attempts to win its second in a row for the first time this season.

Trailing 51-47 with eight minutes to play, Georgio Holt drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key. One minute later, he swished two free throws to start the Huskies’ spurt.

Tech’s defense stepped up by holding Wayne State without a field goal from the 4:53 mark to under 30 seconds. Brandon Ball’s steal and lay-in with 4:09 showing gave the hosts a big boost, and Springborn tallied 11 points during the stretch.

“I’m so happy for the guys,” said head coach Kevin Luke. “They’ve worked extremely hard at improving their shooting, and it paid off today. Robby played like a fifth-year veteran by keeping their defense off balance, and our defense got us the big stops at the end of the game.”

Holt tallied a game-high 19 points and Springborn added 18 — all in the second half. Sean Geary totaled six points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals in an all-around solid game.

Tech held a 31-27 rebounding advantage, with Fedrick Bowe pulling down a team-high six.

Wayne (4-5, 2-3 GLIAC) shot 44 percent from the floor including a 6-of-10 mark from behind the arc. Tech forced 19 turnovers — seven of them by double-teaming the Warriors post player Shane Lawal, who had a triple-double vs. the Huskies in the last meeting.

Michigan Tech will now be off until Saturday, Jan. 3, when it travels to Northern Michigan.
