UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — Michigan Tech received 28 points and 15 rebounds from
Katie Wysocky in a 91-54 GLIAC women’s basketball victory at Saginaw Valley State. The Huskies shot 60 percent from the field and limited the Cardinals to 33 percent in improving to 15-1 overall and 10-1 in league play.
The score at halftime was SVSU 21, Wysocky 21. Fortunately for the Huskies, five other players scored to give them a 42-21 advantage. Tech built the lead slowly and used stifling defense that allowed just six Cardinal field goals in the frame.
SVSU remained with 21 points with 9:00 remaining in the second half before
Katie Zimmerman drained a 3-pointer and Wysocky and
Sarah Stream both converted three-point plays during an 11-0 run. The margin continued to grow as the Tech bench finished off the game.
Sam Hoyt posted seven points in the final seven minutes to help the Huskies win going away.
“We really got a lot of scoring done on the inside today,” said head coach
John Barnes. “Katie (Wysocky) was outstanding.
“I was also proud of the bench in the way they came in and expanded the lead.”
Wysocky tied her career high with 28 points on 10-of-15 field goal shooting and 6-of-6 foul shooting. She registered her 13th double-double of the season.
Four others scored in double figures.
Danae Danen totaled 15 points and three blocks. Stream and Hoyt scored 13 apiece.
Lisa Staehlin added 12 points as the Huskies bench accounted for 27.
Tech turned in a 35-29 rebounding advantage and committed six fewer turnovers (16-10) than the hosts. The Black and Gold’s 60 percent from the field was its best of the season.
Michigan Tech will travel north to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., for a 1 p.m. game at Lake Superior State on Saturday (Jan. 23).
