HOUGHTON, Mich. — The 10th-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team put together a strong game at both ends of the floor to defeat Lake Superior State 74-56 today at the SDC Gym. With the win, the Huskies move to 15-2 overall and 12-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference — their best open to a league schedule in school history.
“I was really proud of the way we played today,” said head coach
John Barnes. “We cut down our mental mistakes, played good defense and boxed out.”
The teams battled through a close first half. Although they never led, the Lakers remained within 31-26 at the break.
Tech opened the second half by scoring the first nine points to open up a 40-26 advantage. The Lakers would put together a 7-0 spurt just minutes later to cut the gap to eight before
Danae Danen’s three-point play at the 14:00 mark pushed the margin into double figures for good.
Sarah Stream was a big factor for the Huskies with 20 points and six assists. She had 14 of those points in the second half including 12 consecutive Tech points during a six-minute stretch.
Katie Wysocky turned in a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Seven other Tech players scored in the contest.
The Black and Gold finished the game at 49 percent from the field and 15-of-18 (83 percent) from the foul line. They only committed nine turnovers while forcing LSSU into 15.
Michigan Tech will remain at home to face No. 25 Grand Valley State next Thursday (Jan. 29). Tipoff at the SDC Gym is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Notes: Tech surpassed the 1992-93 team’s 11-0 mark to open conference play ... Stream’s 20-point game was her second of the season ... With her 12 rebounds today, Wysocky has 656 for her career — tied for fourth-most all-time at Tech.
