HUSKIES REACH REGIONAL TITLE GAME FOR FIFTH TIME
Michigan Tech is playing in its fifth NCAA regional championship contest in school history. Only once in the previous four chances did the Huskies break through. The 1992-93 team went to the Fabulous Four in Waltham, Mass., where it finished in third place. Tech’s most recent appearnce in the regional finals was 1999 at Highland Heights, Ky., against Northern Kentucky. The others were in 1998 and 1995.
STAEHLIN HAVING STANDOUT NCAA TOURNAMENT
Sophomore Lisa Staehlin has posted 28 points and eight rebounds in two games in the NCAA Midwest Regional. The Huskies’ backup post player scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting vs. Northwood last Friday (March 13) before exploding for a career-high 19 points vs. No. 1 Northern Kentucky last Saturday (March 14). Staehlin was 8-of-9 from the floor in the upset, tying a team-high for field goal percentage in a game in 2008-09. The 6-2 center is 12-of-14 from the field and 4-of-5 at the free throw line in the tournament. Her season scoring average has risen to 5.9.
ZIMMERMAN DROPS FOUR 3-POINTERS AGAIN
Junior Katie Zimmerman made 4-of-12 3-point attempts vs. Northern Kentucky and had the team’s first 12 points in the game. Her four 3-pointer effort was her second straight and the 11th of the season where she had at least four. The 5-6 guard, who entered the week ranked second in the nation in 3-point percentage, has 15 made triples in the last four games. Zimmerman owns Tech’s school records for 3-pointers made in a game (six), season (94 and counting) and career (207 and counting). She has at least one 3-pointer in 31-of-32 games this season.
WYSOCKY HAVING STRONG NCAA TOURNAMENT
Katie Wysocky posted 17 points and nine rebounds vs. No. 1 Northern Kentucky last Saturday (March 14). She now has 37 points and 26 rebounds in two NCAA games. The 6-0 forward averages 15.0 points and 10.2 rebounds on the year. Her rebound total of 326 is a school record. Wysocky has has accumulated 817 career rebounds and 1,304 career points in just 89 games in a Michigan Tech uniform. She is second on the school’s career rebounding chart (Dawn Zarling (1990-95) is first with 866) and seventh all-time in scoring (Jenny Postlewaite (1989-93) is first with 1,856).
ALL-GLIAC STARTING FIVE
All five Michigan Tech starters earned All-GLIAC honors as the league announced its awards last week. Sarah Stream, Katie Wysocky and Katie Zimmerman were All-GLIAC North Division First Team selections. Danae Danen was picked to the All-GLIAC North Division Second Team. Tara Ferris gained GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team honors. Never before in school history had Tech placed more than four players on All-GLIAC teams.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS STORY
Michigan Tech holds a cumulative team grade point average of 3.59. All five starters are above a 3.30 GPA, with Sarah Stream (4.0 in exercise science) and Katie Wysocky (3.92 in business administration) leading the way. Both players were named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Second Team. As a team, last year’s Huskies finished second in the nation in grade point average at 3.639 — just a hundredth of a point behind South Dakota in first place.
WYSOCKY AND STREAM NAMED ALL-REGION
Juniors Katie Wysocky and Sarah Stream have been named to Daktronics All-Region teams. Wysocky was selected as one of five players to the all-region first team while Stream earned second team accolades. Wysocky moves onto the national ballot to be eligible for Daktronics All-America honors. Michigan Tech’s 26 wins are tied for the third-most in school history — the most since the 2000-01 campaign when it also had 26. The school record for wins in a season is 30, set in 1992-93. Incidentally, Monday’s (March 16) game vs. Indianapolis will be the Huskies’ 33rd contest of the year, tying a school record (33 in 1992-93) for games played.
PROGRAM SUCCESS
Tech has a streak of 21 straight winning seasons dating back to 1988-89. During that stretch, the Huskies’ women’s basketball program has enjoyed a record of 450-168 (72.8 pct.). Including the team’s present 26-6 mark, there have been 13 20-win seasons, with all coming in the last 19 years (since 1990-91).
THE GUISFREDI FACTOR
Sophomore Angela Guisfredi swished a 3-pointer in Tech’s 76-53 win at Northern Kentucky last Saturday (March 14). In her two-year career with Michigan Tech, the Huskies are 31-2 when the 5-5 guard scores a point. Even better, Tech is undefeated in its last 19 games when Guisfredi makes a 3-pointer. The Hubbell, Mich., native averages 1.9 points per contest in 2008-09.
HEAD COACH JOHN BARNES
John Barnes is just the third coach in Michigan Tech history to win 25 games in a season. The sixth-year skipper is the GLIAC Coach of the Year this season and for the second time in his career (2005-06 was the other). Barnes owns a 122-50 (.709) career record. The former Tech men’s assistant coach has led the Huskies to back-to-back GLIAC North Division titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances in his six years at the helm.
