KENOSHA, Wis. — Lewis defeated Michigan Tech 58-47 in the second game of the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge today. Cold shooting plagued the Huskies in a game in which they had advantages in rebounds (47-39) and turnovers (15-17). The Black and Gold finished at 26 percent from the field including an 0-for-17 mark from 3-point range.
“I was pleased with our defense and hustle today,” said Michigan Tech head coach John Barnes. “We held them to 58 points and took 10 more field goals in the game. We just couldn’t get a basket to fall.”
Tech led, 18-17, with nine minutes to go in the first half, but Lewis finished the frame on a 13-4 run. The Huskies did not score for the final 4:22 of the half, leading to a 30-22 Flyer’s advantage at the intermission.
Lisa Staehlin broke the drought with a free throw at the 18:18 mark of the second half, but the cold field goal shooting continued. The Flyers built up a double-digit point lead 20 seconds later and carried it through the final minute of the game. Krista Kasuboski’s first career points with 10 seconds left made it a nine-point game before LU scored again at the buzzer for a 11-point final margin.
Catherine Rottier led the Huskies in scoring with 14 points. She also notched nine rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Danae Danen finished with double digits for the second straight game with 10 points. Katie Wysocky pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, but was held to nine points.
Tech’s starting five combined to go 9-for-39 from the field including a 3-for-14 mark from Wysocky, who finished among the GLIAC leaders in field goal percentage a year ago.
Michigan Tech (0-2) will return to action with a pair of games at Duluth, Minn., next weekend. The Huskies face Minnesota Duluth at 7 p.m. (ET) on Friday (Nov. 23).
