FINDLAY, Ohio — The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team ran into the Findlay Oilers on the wrong day. The hosts shot 51 percent from the field and made 32-of-36 free throws to outscore the Huskies, 92-77, today at Croy Gymnasium.

Findlay started the game on fire shooting the basketball. The Oilers made six of their first eight 3-pointers and led by as many as 21 points in the opening 20 minutes. Tech used a 15-5 run in the final 5:24 of the half to get within 44-33 at the break.

Tech made several runs in the second half to get back into the game. It could never cut the margin to less than eight, however, as the Oilers had the answer every time.

With 3:33 left in the game, Lucy Dernovsek made a free throw to pull Michigan Tech within 77-68. UF then made 11-of-12 free throws down the stretch to put away their first GLIAC win of the season.

Katie Wysocky turned in her fifth double-double of the campaign with 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Lena Widman added 14 points and Catherine Rottier tallied 10 points and six assists.

“Findlay played really well,” said head coach John Barnes. “We scored 77 points, and that’s almost always enough for us to have a chance to win. Unfortunately, they had a really strong offensive game on their home floor.”

UF made 25-of-49 field goals including 10-of-19 3-pointers (52.6 percent). Tech shot 44.8 percent from the floor including an 8-of-23 mark from long range (34.8 percent). The Huskies held a 30-26 rebounding advantage, but turned the ball over 20 times.

Michigan Tech will return home for its next five games. The Huskies host Minnesota State Moorhead Friday (Dec. 21) at the SDC Gym at 5:30 p.m.
