HOUGHTON, Mich. - After being penalized 72 minutes last night, Michigan Tech was called for just one penalty as they lost to Northern Michigan 2-0 on Saturday. Freshman Bennett Royer, who had not been penalized all season, was sent to the box for holding.

The Huskies (6-8-2, 5-6-1) out shot the Wildcats (7-10-1, 5-9-0), 35-15. Neither could convert on the power play as Northern finished 0-1 and Tech was 0-3.

“I thought we played well the entire weekend. We need to find a way to score goals,” said head coach Jamie Russell.

Sophomore Ray Kaunisto scored the first goal for the Wildcats from the slot at 5:55 of the second period. Sophomore Matt Butcher and freshman Gregor Hanson picked up assists on the even strength goal.

Senior Andrew Sarauer extended the Northern lead to 2-0 with his even strength goal at 17:29 of the second period. Freshman Jared Brown and junior Nick Sirota picked up assists on the goal.

Sophomore Brian Stewart (4-6-1) made 35 saves for Northern in the first shutout of his career.

Junior Rob Nolan (2-4-0) made 13 saves on 15 shots for the Huskies.

The Huskies will return to action Dec. 28th when they take on defending national champion Michigan State in the 43rd Annual Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit, Mich.
