ERIE, Pa. - Five different players scored for Michigan Tech to record its second sweep of the season defeating Mercyhurst 5-1 in a non-conference road match-up.
“I have a lot of respect for Mercyhurst. A lot of guys got rewarded for doing the little things,” said head coach
Jamie Russell.
Senior
Tyler Shelast scored his 11th goal of the season, and second of the weekend, with his game-opening goal at 10:02 of the first period. Senior
Peter Rouleau won the face-off before Shelast’s shot snuck inside the post.
The Lakers tied the game near the end of the period as senior Ben Cottreau scored at 18:43 of the first period. Cottreau used a great individual effort to pick up his seventh goal of the season. He was assisted on the even strength goal by a pair of juniors, Brett Robinson and Kirk Medernach.
After killing off a five-minute major penalty for checking from behind, the Huskies rebounded by scoring a pair of goals in the second period.
“We did a great job tonight. Our penalty kill was huge,” said Russell.
Senior captain
Jimmy Kerr scored his seventh goal of the season after collecting his own rebound that deflected off senior
Tyler Shelast. Sophomore
Drew Dobson also picked up an assist on the goal at 16:22.
Rouleau tallied his first goal of the game and fourth point on the weekend as he scored the Huskies' first shorthanded goal of the season at 19:46. Rouleau created a turnover at center before collecting the puck and skating in alone on Mercyhurst goalie Matt Lundin.
“Pete has great vision as a player and he sees the ice so well. We weren’t clicking at the beginning of the year but it was just a matter of time before we starting clicking,” said Shelast on his fellow line mate.
Junior
Derek Kitti opened the third period with his first goal of the season at 7:43. He was the third Husky to take a shot on the loose puck in front of the net. He was assisted by sophomore
Ryan Bunger and junior
Ryan Angelow.
“I got the third crack at it. I expected to get one sooner or later,” said Kitti.
Angelow then followed up by scoring the final Tech goal at 14:18. He was assisted by junior
Malcolm Gwilliam and freshman
Deron Cousens on the power play goal.
Junior
Rob Nolan (5-5-0) made 22 saves and allowed one goal in his fifth straight start in net for Tech.
Junior Matt Lundin (4-6-1) made 24 saves and gave up all five goals for Mercyhurst.
Tech (9-9-2) scored twice on the power play (2-7) while holding Mercyhurst (5-13-2) scoreless on the man advantage (0-5).
Michigan Tech will return to WCHA play Jan. 11th and 12th when it faces North Dakota on the road.
