Huskies Named WBCA Academic Top 25 Team For Eighth Straight Season
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team was recently named to the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for the 2013-14 season. The Huskies ranked No. 24 in NCAA Division II with a 3.522 grade point average. It is the eighth season in a row the Black and Gold earned the honor.

Men’s Basketball Receives NABC Academic Awards
The Michigan Tech men's basketball team received the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award and nine student-athletes were named to the NABC Honor Court for the 2013-14 season.

Huskies Honored by USTFCCCA for Academics
The Michigan Tech track and field team had three student-athletes earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined academic and athletic accomplishments, during the 2014 season. Alongside the recognition, both the men’s and women’s squads were named USTFCCA All-Academic Teams.

Armga Named GLIAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Former Michigan Tech basketball player Austin Armga (Waupun, Wis./Waupun), and former Grand Valley State track and field athlete Kristen Hixson (Remus, Mich./Chippewa Hills) were named the GLIAC 2013-14 male and female "Scholar-Athletes of the Year," respectively, as voted by the league's faculty athletics representatives.

Shawhan Named Assistant Hockey Coach
Michigan Tech hockey coach Mel Pearson today announced the hiring of Joe Shawhan as assistant coach. Shawhan served as assistant coach at Northern Michigan for the last six seasons. He replaces Damon Whitten, who left to become the head coach at Lake Superior State in April.

Fifth Annual MTB Rendevous at Tech Trails Saturday
The fifth annual Michigan Tech MTB Rondevous begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday (July 19) at the Tech Trails. The Ronde is a 12-hour (or 6-hour) multi-lap mountain bike race around the Michigan Tech trail system. You can ride solo or as a two or four-person team.

Michigan Tech Athletics Salutes Dave Wiitanen
Copper Country native and long-time member of the local hockey community, Dave Wiitanen, has earned the William Thayer Tutt Award from USA Hockey. The award is presented to a volunteer who, during many years of service, has displayed selfless dedication to the enhancement of ice hockey at the grassroots level in the United States.

Michigan Tech season tickets for football, basketball and volleyball are all on sale now at the SDC Ticket Office or by calling 906-487-2073. First dates of home competition for the Huskies are Sept. 4 for volleyball, Sept. 20 for football and Nov. 21 for basketball.

David Johnstone Discusses Red Wings’ Development Camp
Michigan Tech hockey player David Johnstone took part in the Detroit Red Wings Player Development Camp last week. He is one of seven current Huskies to attend NHL camps this summer. Johnstone discussed his experience with MiHockey writer Nick Barnowski.

Three former Michigan Tech hockey players have recently signed NHL contracts: John Scott (2002-06) with the San Jose Sharks, Chris Conner (2002-06) with the Washington Capitals and Brett Olson (2008-12) with the Florida Panthers.

Michigan Tech track and field student-athletes Sean Pengelly and Jason Saliga ran at the 2014 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships on Sunday (July 6). The championships were held at the historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

White and Robinson Part of Texas Stars Calder Cup Run
Two former Michigan Tech hockey players—Scott White (1985-89) and Josh Robinson (2008-12)—were part of this season’s Calder Cup Championship run by the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League. The Stars defeated the St. John’s IceCaps, 4-3, in OT of Game 5 of the best-of-seven series to win the franchise’s first ever Calder Cup on June 17, 2014.

Payne Wins Stanley Cup with Kings
LOS ANGELES — Former Michigan Tech hockey player Davis Payne (1988-92) lifted the Stanley Cup last Friday (June 13) after the Los Angeles Kings defeated the New York Rangers 3-2 in the second overtime to win the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final series 4-1. Payne, who has had a 22-year career in professional hockey as both a player and coach, is an assistant coach for the Kings.
