Baltus and Hanna Join Huskies Hockey Squad
The Michigan Tech hockey team has signed two more players to National Letters of Intent to join the Huskies’ program. Brent Baltus (Nanaimo, B.C.) and Shane Hanna (Salmon Arm, B.C.) will join four other student-athletes who will begin their careers this fall. Four others who have already signed NLIs will not enroll until fall 2014.

Hockey Hands Out 2012-13 Team Awards
Sophomore forward Blake Pietila was named the Merv Youngs Award winner as Michigan Tech hockey’s 2012-13 most valuable player as the Huskies handed out their awards at a team meal last night. A total of nine players earned awards at the event.

Conner Playing with the NHL's Coyotes
Former Michigan Tech hockey player Chris Conner (Westland, Mich.) has played three games with the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes after being called up last Wednesday (April 3) from their AHL affiliate Portland Pirates. Conner, who played at Tech from 2002-06, is with his fourth different NHL team since joining the professional ranks in 2006.

WCHA Announces Future Playoff Format; Unveils Updated Logo
The Western Collegiate Hockey Association today announced that its highly-successful men’s playoff championship – known as the WCHA Final Five – will head to Van Andel Arena and the City of Grand Rapids, Mich., for the 2013-14 and 2015-16 seasons and will return to Xcel Energy Center and the City of Saint Paul, Minn., for the 2014-15 and 2016-17 campaigns.

North Dakota Ends Tech's Hockey Season in Playoff Game 3
No. 4-ranked North Dakota scored one goal in the first period, four in the second and one more in the third to beat Michigan Tech 6-0 tonight and earn a best-of-three WCHA Playoff series win two games to one. The hosts came out firing early and got some bounces along the way to advance to the WCHA Final Five. Tech’s season ends with a 13-20-4 record.

Huskies Upset North Dakota to Force Game Three
Pheonix Copley made 29 saves and C.J. Eick scored the game-winning goal with 2:02 left to play to lift Michigan Tech to a 2-1 victory at No. 4 North Dakota tonight. With the win, the Huskies forced a decisive game in the best-of-three series tomorrow night at 8:07 p.m.

No. 4 North Dakota Downs Tech 5-3 in Playoff Opener
Tonight’s opening game of the WCHA playoffs featured eight goals and 22 penalties as No. 4 North Dakota claimed a 5-3 victory over Michigan Tech. Despite their top two scorers being out of the game (one with injury and the other because of a penalty), the Huskies closed to within 4-3 and hit a pipe on a potential game-tying goal in the closing minutes.

Huskies Drop 4-3 Decision to Colorado College
Michigan Tech held a 49-24 advantage in shots on goal and an 82-37 margin in total shots attempted, but couldn’t overcome an early 3-0 deficit in a 4-3 loss to Colorado College in the final game of the WCHA regular season tonight. The Huskies battled back to within a goal twice and peppered Tigers’ netminder Joe Howe with a season-high number of shots on goal but could not complete the comeback.

Freshman goaltender Jamie Phillips made 22 saves to backstop Michigan Tech to a 2-0 shutout victory over Colorado College tonight at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies scored in the first 10 minutes of the game and added an empty netter in the final minute to earn their 12th win of the season.

Freshman goaltender Jamie Phillips made 36 saves in his second career start to help Michigan Tech to a 5-1 victory at WCHA-leading St. Cloud State tonight at the National Hockey Center. Tech scored 28 seconds into the game and went on to tally four more to gain the series split with No. 7-ranked SCSU and its first win in St. Cloud since 1998.

Michigan Tech scored three goals in a five-minute span in the third period to pull within one, but it was No. 7-ranked St. Cloud State gaining a 5-3 victory in WCHA play at the National Hockey Center tonight. Trailing 4-0 midway through the third period, Tech scored three consecutive goals. SCSU tallied its fifth goal at the 15:34 mark and held on for the victory.

The Michigan Technological University Board of Control today approved the purchase of a $615,000 video scoreboard for the John J. MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Work on the project will begin immediately with completion scheduled for this summer.

Former Michigan Tech hockey player Ron Rolston was named interim head coach of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres last night. The Fenton, Mich., native played forward for the Huskies from 1986-89, amassing 31 goals and 37 assists in 110 career games.

Minnesota State Beats Tech 6-1 Saturday
No. 9 Minnesota State completed the sweep of Michigan Tech with a 6-1 victory tonight at Verizon Wireless Center. The Huskies, who held a 38-28 advantage in shots on goal and seemed to also have the edge in quality scoring chances, deserved a better fate but didn’t get the bounces.

No. 9-ranked Minnesota State defeated Michigan Tech 4-2 at Verizon Wireless Center tonight in WCHA hockey. The Huskies’ Alex Petan scored his 12th and 13th goals of the season, but it was not enough to lift the Black and Gold to a third straight win.

The Michigan Tech hockey team claimed the John MacInnes Cup as Winter Carnival Champions for the first time since 2010 with a 6-1 victory over Alaska Anchorage today and 10-6 advantage in total goals on the weekend. Milos Gordic, who had two goals and two assists in the series, was named Winter Carnival most valuable player.

Alaska Anchorage scored four unanswered goals to top Michigan Tech 5-4 in the opening game of 2013 Winter Carnival at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena tonight. Senior Mikael Lickteig scored 2:56 into overtime to lift Michigan Tech to a 2-1 victory over No. 14 Nebraska-Omaha tonight at CenturyLink Center. The right winger’s first goal of the season and second career goal gave the Huskies the series split.

Michigan Tech cut a two-goal deficit in half three different times but couldn’t complete the comeback in a 4-3 loss at Nebraska-Omaha tonight at CenturyLink Center. Tanner Kero scored with 4:01 remaining, and the Huskies had 28 seconds of power play with an extra attacker on the ice before the game ended.

Tech's New Ice Plant Making More Than Ice
Michigan Technological University replaced the ice-making system in the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena last summer, removing the building’s original Freon 22 direct system and installing an ammonia brine indirect system. The reviews of the ice from rink users are very positive, but the most impressive part of the new system might be its reduced impact on the environment and the University’s budget.

Michigan Tech forward Blake Pietila (Milford, Mich.) has helped Team USA into the semifinals of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships. The U.S. shut out the Czech Republic 7-0 in the quarterfinals today to give itself a chance for a medal.

GLI Champs! Huskies Blank Broncos 4-0 to Claim Title
Michigan Tech claimed its 10th GLI title with a 4-0 victory over No. 7-ranked Western Michigan tonight at Joe Louis Arena. The Huskies’ Pheonix Copley, who slammed the door on Michigan in a 4-0 win last night, became just the second goaltender in GLI history to post back-to-back shutouts. He was named the winner of the John MacInnes Trophy as the tournament MVP.

Michigan Tech freshmen Jujhar Khaira and Alex Petan combined for three goals and freshman goaltender Pheonix Copley made 38 saves en route to a 4-0 shutout victory over Michigan in the second semifinal of the 48th Annual Great Lakes Invitational. Khaira (one goal, two assists) and Petan (two goals) accounted for five points in the contest.

No. 8 North Dakota earned a 4-1 victory over Michigan Tech tonight by building an early lead and holding on. The game started with a flurry as each team put a goal on the board in the first two minutes. UND scored the eventual game winner at the 6:47 mark of the first before adding two more in the second.

Michigan Tech suffered a 6-1 setback at the hands of No. 8 North Dakota tonight. The Huskies (4-9-3, 3-7-3 WCHA) got down 2-0 but scored early in the second period and just missed on a great scoring opportunity to tie the game at 2-all moments later. UND (9-5-3, 6-2-3 WCHA) went on to score the next four goals to earn the victory.

For the second straight Friday game against Minnesota Duluth, Michigan Tech fell behind 4-0. Last year, the Huskies were able to grind out a 4-all tie. Tonight, Tech pulled within 4-3 but couldn’t complete the comeback as the Bulldogs scored the final three goals in a 7-3 decision.

Blake Pietila scored with 30.2 seconds left in overtime to carry Michigan Tech to a 2-1 victory tonight and a series sweep at Bemidji State this weekend. Jujhar Khaira fed a pass to a wide-open Pietila in the slot who buried a shot into the upper right corner for the game winner.

Jujhar Khaira scored two third-period goals and assisted on the game-winner to help Michigan Tech defeat Bemidji State 5-4 in overtime tonight in WCHA hockey. The Huskies (3-6-0, 2-5-0 WCHA) trailed 4-2 with less than eight minutes to play before mounting the comeback for their first road win of the season.

No. 5-ranked Denver scored five goals for the second straight night to defeat Michigan Tech 5-2 in WCHA hockey at Magness Arena tonight. The Huskies (2-4-0, 1-3-0 WCHA) trailed 3-1 in the second period with three consecutive power plays but could not get back into the game. DU (4-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) put it away in the third with two more goals.

MARIE, Mich. — Michigan Tech held a 2-1 third period lead before Lake Superior State scored three unanswered goals to earn a 4-2 victory in both teams’ season openers tonight at Taffy Abel Arena.
