Rookie Petan Nets Hat Trick as Tech Rolls Brock 6-2

Postgame Interviews

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Freshman Alex Petan netted a hat trick in his collegiate debut to help Michigan Tech defeat Brock 6-2 in exhibition play at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena tonight. The rookie posted one goal in each period. Freshmen (four goals) and sophomores (two) contributed all the scoring for the Huskies.

A total of 24 players dressed for Tech and all played, including three goaltenders. Freshman Pheonix Copley got the start and played the first period. Freshman Jamie Phillips played the second and allowed one goal. Senior Kevin Genoe played the third and allowed the other.

"This was a good game for us," said head coach Mel Pearson. "There were a lot of things that I liked and still things to improve on.
"It was great that we got a lot of people involved in the game and got them experience. And we shook some rust off."

Tech struck first with a tally from Blake Pietila. Milos Gordic skated the puck behind the net and fed a pass out front to Pietila who buried it top shelf 8:04 into the contest.

Petan tallied the first of his three seven minutes later as he stuffed home a rebound.

Brock pulled within 2-1 on Andrew Boudreau's goal early in the second period, but the Huskies answered with three more in the frame.

Petan tipped a shot from the point past goaltender Kody Blois at the 6:04 mark. Jujhar Khaira scored after he won the faceoff to himself and fired a quick shot. David Johnstone scored the third of the period after a cross-ice pass from Malcolm Gould gave him an open net.

Petan finished off his hat trick with a power-play goal that was banked off Blois from an odd angle 20 seconds into the third period.

Boudreau tallied his second goal for the visiting Badgers to wrap up scoring at the 14:42 mark of the third.

Tech finished 2-of-5 on the power play while Brock was 0-for-1. The Huskies trio of netminders combined for 26 saves—7 from Copley, 11 from Phillips and 8 from Genoe.

The Black and Gold held a 47-28 advantage in shots on goal.

Michigan Tech will be back in action tomorrow with an intrasquad game in Calumet at 3 p.m. The game is part of a larger community event at Calumet Colosseum sponsored by Aspirus Keweenaw that begins with a tailgate party at 2 p.m.
