Hanna Signs With Texas Stars for 2017-18

Hanna Signs With Texas Stars for 2017-18

CEDAR PARK, Texas – Michigan Tech hockey senior Shane Hanna signed with the Texas Stars of the AHL for the 2017-18 season, the team announced Wednesday (May 10) afternoon. Texas is the primary AHL affiliate of the NHL's Dallas Stars.

Hanna, a native of Salmon Arm, British Columbia, played four seasons for the Huskies, appearing in 163 games at defense. He never missed a game in his career, finishing two games short of a Tech record.

Hanna, a two-time assistant captain, led the Huskies with 90 career points on 21 goals and 69 assists. He was second on the 2016-17 squad with 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists) and was named to the All-WCHA Second Team, earning all-conference honors for the fourth year in a row. He was an All-WCHA Third Team selection in 2014-15 and 2015-16, and named to the All-WCHA Rookie Team in 2013-14. Hanna also earned WCHA All-Academic honors in 2015-16.

Hanna was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2017 WCHA Championship after scoring the game-winning goal in the second overtime to send the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. He was also named WCHA Player of the Week after the goal and was the co-recipient of the Merv Youngs Awards as the team's most valuable player.

Hanna scored two other game winners as a senior, both in one-goal road wins at Alaska (Nov. 26) and at Northern Michigan (Feb. 24). His three game-winning goals led all WCHA defensemen. Tech was 7-1 when he scored a goal and 14-3-2 when he recorded a point. Hanna finished third in the country in plus-minus during the 2014-15 season with a +28 while also being +21 in 2015-16.

Hanna was a member of a senior class that won 89 games—the most since the 1984 class. The Huskies twice went to the NCAA Tournament, won the MacNaughton Cup, won the Broadmoor Trophy, won the Desert Hockey Classic, were ranked No. 1 in the country, and went 4-for-4 in the annual Winter Carnival series during his time in a Tech sweater.

Before his career at Tech, Hanna played for the Thompson Blazers (BCMML), Osoyoos Coyotes (KIJHL), Penticton Vees (BCHL), and Salmon Arm Silverbacks (BCHL). He was an assistant captain with the Silverbacks in 2012-13 and led the league's defensemen in scoring with 50 points (12 goals, 38 assists) in 53 games. He was named a BCHL Interior Conference First Team All-Star.

Michigan Tech Hall of Famer Scott White is the General Manager of the Texas Stars along with his duties as the Assistant GM of the Dallas Stars. White played 154 games for the Huskies from 1985-89. He also served as an assistant coach from 1994-99. As a player, White racked up 93 points on 20 goals and 73 assists from the blue line.
