Kinrade on Canada’s Karjala Cup Roster, Under Consideration for Olympics

Kinrade on Canada’s Karjala Cup Roster, Under Consideration for Olympics

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Former Michigan Tech hockey player Geoff Kinrade has been named to Canada's Karjala Cup roster and is under consideration for Canada's roster for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea in February 2018.

Kinrade currently plays for HC Kunlun Red Star, China's only team in the Kontinental Hockey League. The 32-year old played one game for the Tampa Bay Lightening in 2009 after wrapping up a four-year career with the Huskies from 2005-09. The defenseman played 150 games in a Tech uniform, tallying 61 points on 14 goals and 47 assists. He was an alternate captain as a senior in 2008-09.

"We are bringing together a group of players who are on our radar for the upcoming Olympic Winter Games as part of our ongoing evaluation process, with the goal of fielding the best possible team next February," said Canada's general manager Sean Burke. "These 26 players are part of the larger group that is still under consideration for the Olympic team; 10 of these players were not with us in August in Russia, while others who remain under consideration won't join us next month due either to their being unavailable, or because we feel we already have a good sense of where they could fit with our team.

"As a management group and coaching staff, our priority is putting the best possible team together, and we will continue to evaluate every Canadian player that's eligible to represent their country at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games to ensure we give ourselves the best possible chance for success in Korea."

Kinrade, a native of Nelson, British Columbia, played two full seasons in the AHL before heading oversees. He's played in 160 games over the past four years in the KHL and serves as an alternate captain this season. He won the AHL Calder Cup with the Binghamton Senators in 2011, an NLA Championship with SC Bern in 2013, and a gold medal at the Spengler Cup with Team Canada in 2012.

The Karjala Cup, a warm-up tournament ahead of the Olympics, takes place November 8-12 in Helsinki, Finland and Biel, Switzerland and will see Canada face off against Switzerland, Sweden, and Finland.

The NHL is not participating in the Olympics this year after playing in every Winter Olympics since 1998. Most Olympic teams will be made up of players who compete professionally in Russia, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, and the Czech Republic with a few AHL, US College, and Canadian junior players mixed in.
