Huskies fall in 53rd GLI Title Game

DETROIT – Michigan Tech had its four-game unbeaten streak come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Bowling Green in the 53rd Great Lakes Invitational Championship Game Tuesday (Jan. 2) at Little Caesars Arena.

The Falcons scored three unanswered goals after Tech tied it up to win their first GLI Title. For the Huskies, it was their third straight runner-up finish.

"I give full credit to the way Bowling Green played the hockey game tonight," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We were able to play the way we wanted to through the first two periods. It turned into the Bowling Green style game in the third period. I think they had a way of breaking our will a little bit."

Bowling Green got on the board first 18:17 into the first period with a power-play goal by Brett D'Andrea.

The Huskies tied it up 2:37 into the second when Jake Lucchini put in his second of the weekend. He finished off a setup pass by Brent Baltus for his seventh goal of the season. Gavin Gould also assisted.

Connor Ford gave the Falcons the lead back 8:04 into the second, putting in a rebound.

Justin Misiak tied it up at two with 1:24 remaining in the second, but the officials waved the goal off after a lengthy review. Mitch Meek took a wrist shot from the point that Greyson Reitmeier tipped with a high stick before Misiak put in the rebound.

"I didn't agree with the call, but I don't think that was the difference in the game," added Shawhan. "We still had some power plays after that and chances to score some goals."

BGSU (10-6-6) put in a pair of third-period goals to take control of the game and hoist the MacInnes Cup for the first time. John Schilling scored 12:10 into the final frame, and Tyler Spezia added to the lead 63 seconds later.

Tech outshot BGSU 30-25 in the game. Robbie Beydoun had 21 saves for the Huskies, while Eric Dop stopped 29 shots for the visitors, including 12 in the first period alone.

Baltus extended his point streak to eight games with the first-period assist. He has five goals and seven assists in the span.

Mitch Reinke was named to the GLI All-Tournament Team.

The Huskies and Falcons will meet for the fourth and fifth time on February 2-3 in Ohio.

Tech is now 10-8-5 on the season and travels west for the Ice Vegas Invitational this weekend at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Huskies open against Boston College on Friday, while Arizona State and Northern Michigan meet in the second semifinal.
