Shawhan Named Assistant Hockey Coach
Michigan Tech hockey coach Mel Pearson today announced the hiring of Joe Shawhan as assistant coach. Shawhan served as assistant coach at Northern Michigan for the last six seasons. He replaces Damon Whitten, who left to become the head coach at Lake Superior State in April.

Michigan Tech Athletics Salutes Dave Wiitanen
Copper Country native and long-time member of the local hockey community, Dave Wiitanen, has earned the William Thayer Tutt Award from USA Hockey. The award is presented to a volunteer who, during many years of service, has displayed selfless dedication to the enhancement of ice hockey at the grassroots level in the United States.

David Johnstone Discusses Red Wings’ Development Camp

Three former Michigan Tech hockey players have recently signed NHL contracts: John Scott (2002-06) with the San Jose Sharks, Chris Conner (2002-06) with the Washington Capitals and Brett Olson (2008-12) with the Florida Panthers.

White and Robinson Part of Texas Stars Calder Cup Run
Two former Michigan Tech hockey players—Scott White (1985-89) and Josh Robinson (2008-12)—were part of this season’s Calder Cup Championship run by the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League. The Stars defeated the St. John’s IceCaps, 4-3, in OT of Game 5 of the best-of-seven series to win the franchise’s first ever Calder Cup on June 17, 2014.

Payne Wins Stanley Cup with Kings
LOS ANGELES — Former Michigan Tech hockey player Davis Payne (1988-92) lifted the Stanley Cup last Friday (June 13) after the Los Angeles Kings defeated the New York Rangers 3-2 in the second overtime to win the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final series 4-1. Payne, who has had a 22-year career in professional hockey as both a player and coach, is an assistant coach for the Kings.

Michigan Tech Names 2014 Sports Hall of Fame Class
Six individuals and the 1965 NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey National Championship team will join the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame at an induction ceremony in November. The individuals are: longtime football coach Bernie Anderson, former hockey player Tom Bissett, former basketball player Matt Cameron, former football player Alex Kowalski, former basketball player Jenny Sorenson (Wypych) and former football player Nick Sturm.

Former Husky Pat Mikesch Named Head Coach for Green Bay Gamblers
Former Michigan Tech hockey player Pat Mikesch was named head coach of the United States Hockey League’s Green Bay Gamblers yesterday. The Hancock, Mich., native, who played for the Huskies from 1992-96 and served as assistant coach from 2004-11, spent the previous three years as the Gamblers’ associate head coach and director of player personnel.

Michigan Tech held its first-ever Spring Hockey Carnival at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena last Saturday. More than 200 children plus parents attended the event, interacting with Tech hockey players and enjoying free food.

Robinson Continues Playing Career in Texas
Former Michigan Tech goaltender Josh Robinson (2008-12), who split time this season between the American Hockey League’s Texas Stars and the East Coast Hockey League’s Idaho Steelheads, is set to begin the Western Conference Finals of the Calder Cup Playoffs with the Stars on Friday (May 23). Texas has home ice advantage for its seven-game series vs. the Toronto Marlies.

Devin Kero Becomes Newest Hockey Husky
Hancock, Mich., native Devin Kero will join his older brother Tanner on Michigan Tech’s hockey roster next fall it was announced today by coach Mel Pearson. The goaltender, who was an British Columbia Hockey League All-Rookie Team selection in 2013-14, joins 12 other recruits who have already signed with the Huskies.
